When I entered the field of NLP 40 years ago in the 1980s, there was a lot of energy and excitement. At that time NLP was a new dynamic way of thinking about human beings and their potentials. The field was expanding, new models and patterns were being developed and NLP was spreading all around the world.
In 2011, I launched, along with Shelley Rose Charvet, a book that we edited from 22 contributors about the many new models and patterns that arose in NLP in the 1990s and 2000s. That book--- Innovations in NLP (2011).
Some years during the 1990s---2000, however, things began to change for the worse. Conflicts arose taking attention away from what we had---a transformational model that can change lives with more grace and efficiency than nearly everything else. I detailed a lot of ‘the fall’ of NLP in NLP Secrets--- Untold Stories (2018).
Where is the field of NLP today? Not in a good place, we have lots all of the Journals and Magazine; many of the Associations have ceased, and trainings have been seriously reduced around the world since the pandemic. Further, there are fewer and fewer new developments. When we asked for responses for Volume II of Innovations in NLP we only had 3 responses. This is not good. If NLP goes away, it will be a tremendous lost for the world.
What is needed? While I can mention many things, one thing is essential--- a new focus on modeling. The field began by modeling experts and the field can be renewed if we put a new focus on how to model.
The Meta Fest 2026 that Connor and Kallum have envisioned offers a great way to begin to rejuvenate the field. By bringing together many of those who have created the field and kept infusing it with new ideas--- they have designed a Meta Fest 2026. Connor and Kallum has asked that I sent 5 emails about this .. Tomorrow I will write more about this wonderful event. And amazingly, it is totally free.
